Pattern mixing for interiors can definitely be scary, but when done correctly it can be very tasteful. Interior trends of the past featured Drapes that matched the couches, that matched the lamp shades, that matched the carpet. thankfully, times have changed and pattern mixing is a great way to add dimension and visual interest to a space. Don’t stress, whether you’re looking to mix and match patterned curtains with a patterned rug, or mix polka dots and stripes together in one space, we’re here to show you how to do it properly!

Stick with the same theme. This will depend on how you want the space to feel. Feminine vibe? Floral Prints. Eccentric vibe? Animal Prints. Bohemian vibe? Ikat and Dye Prints.
Play with scale. Mixing patterns at the same scale will be overwhelming, over-stimulating, and quite frankly, not visually appealing. However, you can alternate between large and small scale patterns, to compliment each other in just the right way. Choose 1 large scale pattern, 1 medium, and 1 small scale. Or 1 large scale and 2 medium scale— either way, keeping with different scales will draw the eye to different pieces in the space. like in the image at right.
Stay in the same color family. Now, this doesn’t mean that every pattern has to be the same exact color, just the same family. Cousins, not twins! Color can be mixed, but stick to a clear palette such as mostly pastels or mostly jewel tones, or monochromatic patterns.
Balance. This is one of the most important parts when it comes to mixing patterns. The human eye needs a break, like us it needs spaces to rest. This can be created by mixing solids in with patterns and distributing patterns evenly throughout the space like in the table setting below. The larger the space, the more important balance is; If all your patterns are on one side of the room, it would be very unbalanced. Space patterns around around the room utilizing rugs, artwork, pillows, and accent furniture when appropriate.
